Costa Rica

October 23, 2009

We met in an unlikely place,
near the land bridge that blocked
domesticated animals
and food production technology
from reaching the Incas.

My Cromagnum man was a continent off.
Her hunter-gatherer
passed this narrow isthmus
millenia earlier,
instinctively knowing
survival was more likely
one step southward,
one mysterious mile away.

We fell in love just the same,
two wanderers half a world away
from our now parceled homelands,
reenacting
the Conquistadores’
hybridization of the Americas,
at times, with the same violent
abandon.

Our legacy remains
purely metaphorical,
like Gran Colombia,
before
it was scarred from ear to ear.
